Three Hitchcock Films From the Forties:
The producer-director partnership between David O. Selznick and Alfred Hitchcock was never a happy one. By the mid-40s, the Master was on his way to declaring his independence from the pompous producer. We begin with Spellbound (1945), which came about as a result of Selznick’s experiences on his psychologist’s couch. They began working together on Notorious in 1946 but Hitchcock maneuvered himself beyond Selznick’s control and completed the masterpiece without interference. By 1948’s Rope, Hitchcock asserted his autonomy from Selznick and added the title of producer to his impressive resume. Each film will be introduced with a short video; after the screening, we will share our reactions.
